How to renew your car's Travis or Williamson County Vehicle Registration at a local HEB

Do you need your car's registration renewed quickly?

Renewing your car or truck's registration at one of HEB's locations is very convenient. I'll cover the details about renewing your Travis, Williamson, or another Texas counties car registration at HEB's business center in this post.

Whether it was your busy schedule or waiting until payday (cause you blew your last paycheck on taco's and Topo Chico, not judging). No worries you don't' need to find time to go to the County Tax Assessor's office during normal government hours(Monday-Friday 8am-5pm and closed on Holidays) right when you're working.

Texas has given local County Tax Accessors the ability to deputize local HEB's and their employees to renew Texas vehicle registrations at their locations. Let me walk you through what you need to bring, do you qualify, the costs, and more.

What you'll need to bring to your HEB to renew your Texas car registration?

Valid Safety Inspection certificate – officially "Vehicle Inspection Report" from within the last 90 days
Proof of Insurance (in case the online system is down)
Registration notice sent in the mail
Registration must be current or expired registration with the 5 day grace period
Payment (cash or card)

Make sure to hold onto your registration paperwork and not just the sticker. I recommend keeping it with your insurance in a car document holder .

Can I go to any HEB to renew my registration?

You will need to go to a HEB location inside the county you are registering your vehicle in. Those that live near county borderlines make sure that your closest store is in your county. Check which county any address is in here or give them a call to ask.

Where to go inside HEB?

Once entering the store head over to the Business Center. The Business Center is what HEB's call it's customer service counter where you go to cash in your winning lotto tickets, handle returns, rent carpet cleaners, etc. It is usually located in the front of the store near the registers.

When does HEB renew car registration?

It does vary by location, so give them a call in advance. They should do this during their business center hours which are usually around 9a-7pm.

Do I need a bring a copy of my car insurance policy for HEB?

When speaking with some of the Business Center staff they strongly recommend bringing in a printed copy of your car insurance policy declaration in case the Texassure verification system is down. Remember the declaration is more than the small card with your policy number. It includes the information about the level of coverage you have. If you have a policy through a licensed Texas Insurance Agency you will meet the minimum coverage levels.

Do I need to bring my safety inspection report?

Not really, the clerks at the desk have access to verify your safety inspections report (Vehicle Inspection Report). The safety inspection should be available to access as a digital copy online as late as the next day. If you misplaced it and would like to print out a duplicate visit mytxcar.org to access this. It is still best to have a printed version for renewing at HEB.

Will it cost more than the County Tax Assessors Office?

No, it will likely cost less. There is no convenience fee for renewing a vehicle registration at one of HEB's locations. HEB use to charge a $1 service fee, but they no longer do in Travis. That means it will only cost you more if you decide to grab one of those impulse items at the counter. With all that time saved why not test your luck on the Powerball, Mega Millions, or even just the Texas Two Step with it's minimum $200,000 jackpot.

Do they accept debit/credit cards? and what is the fee?

HEB will accept debit cards with a make credit card logo on them with no additional fee. They don't not accept credit cards at this time. In comparison to the Travis County Tax Assessor Office which charges a fee of 3% of the transaction's total with a minimum of $3 for accepting a credit or debit card. Meaning it will cost less unless you pay cash, then it's the same.

What is the grace period if your registration has expired?

Your vehicle's registration expires on the 5th day of the following month listed on your sticker. Using the sticker below for example, if your sticker shows 05 14 (for May 2015) you have until June 5th of 2014 before you risk a ticket. Your local HEB can renew your registration up until that 5th day of the following month. After this grace period ends you will be required to visit your local Tax Assessor's Office.

Yes, HEB can help you renew your motorcycles Texas registration. The same rules apply to motorcycles as they do cars.

Does the vehicle owner need to be present?

No, if you helping out a loved one, friend, or boss they don't need to be present to renew the registration at HEB or Tax Assessor's Office.

With as convenient as this is compared to visiting the County Tax Assessor's Office, I still prefer doing it online. When waiting for your registration sticker in the mail you can print out a receipt showing you've paid and are waiting for it to be mailed to you. The receipt you can print will save you from being issued an $83 ticket for expired registration and $65 for if the safety inspection wasn't performed.
